The Beatles Album Cuts
67Here Comes The Sun
This hub is in response to a request from DJ Funktual. Our own Master of Music has asked for an article about album cuts by The Beatles. Not just album cuts, deep album cuts. *Gulp* I'm only a lowly writer. I'm not worthy of such an in-depth assignment from the Master. Feeling a little nervous about this one.
Any of you that have gotten to know me, understand that I consider myself one the world's oldest living Beatlemaniacs. I don't get into much of the history and stats, but the music keeps my love for the Fab Four strong some four decades after I first heard them on the Ed Sullivan Show.
My biggest challenge with this subject matter is the fact that I have no idea which songs other people know or consider a ‘deep cut'. After spending several minutes worrying about that aspect of it, I said, "<censored expletive!>", and decided to just do the ones that I thought should be part of this showcase. Some of my favs are cuts that I'm sure other people (my friends and family) don't understand, don't like, or have never heard of. Those made my short list, regardless of how they're viewed globally. Guess that makes this something of an opinion piece.
The Beatles had 47 number one hits on the Top 40 list during their six and a half year reign. Heaven! I'm proud to share my boys with you. Hope you enjoy them.
Without further adieu, I give you Shirley's List of The Beatles Album Cuts. Deep Album Cuts.
The Beatles Baby's in Black (Live)
Baby's In Black - Beatles For Sale (1964)
I wasn't going to include this one. As far as I know everybody in the world is familiar with it. Though I love the lyrics and tune, it's about as depressing as a country song. I sing along with it and sway, but it makes a person want to pop open a beer so they can cry in it. However, there are a number of people online who feel that Baby's In Black is indeed a deep cut. This one is for the masses, despite my claim above that I wasn't going to do that.
Beatles For Sale is considered by some to have been the weakest of the group's endeavours, yet still a great album. Let's face it, The Beatles never made a bad album. Some were just more ‘classic' than others. If this album really was a weak link for the boys, then it served a purpose. Their follow-up album, Help! was as strong as they come in 1965.
The album did mark a small turning point for John and Paul. John had met Bob Dylan, and the story goes that John was influenced by him and wanted to start making songs that were mini autobiographies. "I'm a Loser" is supposedly a track that illustrates how John was feeling about himself at the time.
Beatles For Sale was the fourth album recorded and released in only 21 months! Only my boys could do that.
The Beatles - The Word
The Word - Rubber Soul (1965)
You cannot possibly listen to The Word without moving your body. If you can, you are not a card carrying Beatlemaniac. This tune from 1965's Rubber Soul, gives us such a huge glimpse of The Beatles to come.
The Word was seen as the first of the boys' songs that dealt with love as a larger concept. It opened the door for songs like, All You Need Is Love to follow. That designates this as a pivotal influence in their career, as far as I'm concerned.
A little trivia for you - George Martin was the playing the harmonium solo on this track.
Go ahead and play it again, you know you want to.
I've Just Seen A Face - 1965
***** I've Just Seen a Face *****
If you listen to only one of the videos here, make it THIS ONE! I've Just Seen a Face is one of my all time favourite songs. I challenge you to listen without singing along.
Released in the U.K. on the Help! album, and in the U.S. on Rubber Soul, the song briefly carried a title of "Aunty Gin's Theme", named for Paul's paternal aunt, because the song was one of her favourites. The tune is also notable due to the fact that there is no bass track.
Many people have done covers of this song, but I've personally only heard one. I consider the remaking or disin' of Beatles songs to be blasphemy.
Did I've Just Seen a Face do anything for their career? I don't know, but it did something for me.
Beatles - Norwegian Wood - Very Rare
Norwegian Wood - Rubber Soul (1965)
Rubber Soul seems to be taking all the awards in this contest. Norwegian Wood is haled by many as being a cut. I do like it, but I'm not convinced that others aren't aware of it, and aren't aware of how good it is.
Paul wrote the middle of the song, with John writing the rest. This was the first western pop tune recorded using a sitar. Perhaps a result of their time spent with Ravi Shankar?
The lyrics in Norwegian Wood are darker than many of The Beatles' previous works, and are considered to be the story of a man setting fire to a woman's apartment after she "leaves him to sleep in the bath", rather than letting the evening finish as he had hoped.
Norwegian Wood illustrated to the boys' adoring fans that they were expanding and experimenting with their craft, and showed the direction they would soon go in.
Beatles - Dr. Robert
Dr. Robert - Revolver (1966)
Dr. Robert was allegedly a code name for the boys' drug dealers, although John claimed he was Dr. Robert. He was quoted as saying that he was the one that carried around all the Fab Four's pills, at least in the beginning.
The main reason I'm including this song is because I don't think many people know about it. Or at least they don't listen to it. It is a story of where the boys were at during that time.
If you watch the pics in the video, you can see the album cover with the dead baby parts (dolls). If you ever get your hands on one, you'll have a collector's item. That cover was created in the U.K., but was changed when U.S. market testing found it offensive. To avoid controversary, they revamped the Revolver cover. Some of the records had already been released, so like I said if you find one, hang on to it and let me know.
Blue Jay Way - Magical Mystery Tour
Blue Jay Way - Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
I'm including this one because when I hear it, I'm just so struck at the contrast between this phase of their music and their beginnings. From She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand, to Blue Jay Way. Stark!
This one was written by George and released on the Magical Mystery Tour album in 1967. A quick search of my brain's memory banks reminds me that the whole premise of MMT was to hop a bus without a destination and travel around to see what interesting things might happen. The resulting movie sucked (in my opinion), but the soundtrack was legendary, as is most of their stuff.
The studio people got the funky sounds in the track by using audio delayed recording techniques.
Blue Jay Way is a real street in the Hollywood Hills. George apparently wrote the song while waiting there for a friend.
Did Magical Mystery Tour help The Beatles grow as a group? Well, it may have let them know what doesn't work when making a movie. I honestly don't know if anything that came after that was directly linked to their MMT experience, or the fact that they were getting older and changing viewpoints.
The Beatles Hey Bulldog - 1969
Hey Bulldog - Yellow Submarine
This is an interesting little ditty that was written mostly by John but credited to both he and Paul. It was originally "Hey Bullfrog", but Paul started barking during the recording and apparently the boys liked that better than 'ribbit', because they changed it.
Hey Bulldog was one of the few Beatles songs to revolve around a piano rift. The recording was filmed extensively, with the film being used later on to promote the Lady Madonna video.
There were two versions of this song. One was recorded and left as is, the other was remixed and all the background frivolity and noise was removed.
According to their engineer at Abbey Road Studios, this was the last song The Beatles recorded as a cohesive unit. After that, they began drifting apart thanks to business, personal and artistic differences.
Beatles - One After 909
One After 909 - Let It Be (1970)
One After 909 was released in 1970 on Let It Be. It was their last record. Ever.
This is another one that was written primarily by John but credited to both he and Paul. It was actually composed in 1957 when the boys were still teens hanging around their neighbourhood together. The first attempt to release the song was in 1963, but they were unhappy with it and canned it. This version is faster than the first one they tried to record. I LOVE this song.
The video came from their 1969 rooftop concert. I haven't seen it in a lot of years, but I seem to recall they also played Get Back. What I did not remember, was that George was wearing light green pants. It was a different time.
The difference in the way the two songs sounded represented the evolution of their change in styles over time. Maybe that makes it the perfect ending for them, but it marked a sad time for me.
And In The End....
I could go on for pages and pages, but I'll stop here. The page is starting to get slow to load, and has become an editing nightmare.
DJ, thank-you from the bottom of my heart for requesting this! I had the best time ever while making it. Loved it so much in fact, that I've already decided that I want to do one on rare Beatles recordings.
Peace folks, and remember - all ya need is love.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Beatles Album Cuts ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You Know My Name, Look Up the NumberLoading...
I wasn;t very old when the Beatles surfaced so I cant remember them very well from the old days. Haha :P
This is a great hub and very well written at that. You are a good writer. poke poke poke
So are we both still babes ;) I know you are. :P
You're welcome. ;)
I love beatles! They're all crunchy on the outside, and creamy on the inside! Kinda like Monty Python's Crunchy Frog candies!
Love the Beatles, and the Monkeys----My husband thinks I'm crazy, but this brings back some memories for me! ( I know you guys are going to say I'm too young, but my parents raised me on music from this era!)
I thoroughly enjoyed this HUB.
IMMENSELY, even.
He's right, you're wqriting and personal reflections were as good as the little known facts about the band. All You Need Is Love, true. BUT then why can't I wait for your next one. Sorry about all the editing nigtmares but I am gonna hound you to repeat a fantastic effort such as this.
Bring on Part 2 whenever you get a chance. LOVED LOVED LOVED it!
Thank You Shirley.
More DEEP Cuts! More More More I say. :D
Ringo was the coolest Beatle
Great selection of songs and I can see how much work you put into this. One question though (pardon my ignorance): what is a "deep cut"? Actually, what's a "cut" come to that? I'd really like to know.
The Walrus was Paul, but who was Billy Shears? (Pete Beste)
Thanks so much for this article! It is nice to have a chance to revisit my memories. I am a huge fan. To me, they will always be the best rock and roll band.
The Silkie actually had a hit with Norwegian Wood and I think it was their only hit.
I had the good fortune to see them in 1964 (I was in 5th grade!) at the Forest Hills Tennis Stadium and again in 1965 at Shea Stadium. Those are good memories.
I would love to hear your comments on the Revolver album, it had such great songs. I like them all but I always liked Tomorrow Never Knows.
Please write more on The Beatles.
Susan
Pete Beste was Billy Shears......
Hey, didn't you read my Hub JOHN LENNON'S FAVORITE NIGHTMARE?????
Hee hee hee.....
It's just good to be reminded what a great band they really were. I look forward to future complilations.
Shirley, thanx so very much for this great hub, great writing, great research, great songs...ahhhhhhh, the sixties (is that a bunch of years? or is that an age group?).
Right now, I'm taking a submerge in my yellow submarine. -Helen (a.k.a. Creativita)
Great hub as usual. I've loved the Beatles since 1963. This Boy was one of my favourite songs. I was in Scotland at the time. My friends and I used to pretend to be the Beatles. I was usually Paul, playing a tennis racket left handed :)
I'm also a fan of the Monkees. I loved Davy when I was little.
Abby Road is my favorite, but the Beatles are great! Thanks for the interesting hub.
First I would like to thank you very very much Shirley for taking on this indeed intimidating challenge from the Master DJ. Congratulations! You got his approval. I don't know where to begin commenting from the mountain of memories jogged from your hub. Let me begin here: First I have to say that these are my boys too. Sorry Shirley, I think I'm older than you, I win but willing to share.
Regarding the cuts that you listed above, I loved and listened to Norwegian Wood over and over and over every night before I fell asleep. Many nights I was alone in my apartment and "our boys" kept me company.
Your hub reminded me that in my basement stored away in a crate are my husband and my old albums. There are over 100. (I remember the day I had to explain to my kids what an album was). But anyway I pulled the crate out, peaked through the crack and saw John Lennon collections. I don't have time right now to look through because I am going away for a few days but I am going through these someday soon with my husband. These albums are packed away tight so just now I pulled one out because it had a flap on the top I could pull up. This 3 album collection is called "The concert for Bangladesh". I remember buying it because it had lots from George Harrison, here they are: Number 1 on the album was George Harrison's Ravi Shankar Intro, following Bangla Desh by George Harrison, Something, Wah-Wah, My Sweet Lord, Awaiting on You All, It Don't Come Easy, Beware of Darkness, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, and Here Comes the Sun. Oh how I wish I had a record play right now. Many more great songs on these albums with Billy Preston's That's The Way God Planned It , Bob Dylan with Mr. Tambourine Man and many more, and Mick Jaggar of course with Jumping Jack Flash.
This hub is awesome, I just listened to all the videos above and now I have to run. I will return to let you know what's in my treasure chest in the basement. I can hardly wait. Oh ya, I almost forgot, inside the cover of this album set I found a birthday card from my brother-in-law to my sister. How the heck did I end up with that! It is tooo hysterical. I am spending the weekend with them and celebrating his birthday which is today (June 27). I think I will give him this card for his birthday! I really gotta run now! I'll be back but before I go, thumbs up Shirley!!!!!
Great hub Shirley about a great band and great music. I have a lot of their titles instrumentally and jazzy-fied and that actually really shows off what talented music writers they were.
nice hub regards Zsuzsy
Great Hub, I love the Beatles. The only album I own today is the white album.
One of my favorite songs is Rocky Racoon.
Good stuff, Shirley. I'm old enough -sigh!- to remember the Beatles when they were new. Granted, I was about 5 or 6, but I remember it well, and I remember watching their landmark appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show... I was sitting cross-legged, right in front of the TV.
Anyways; One of my favorite Beatles songs has always been Maxwell's Silver Hammer. It's such a twisted lyric, with such whimsical music... truly disturbing, and I love it.
Also, I really appreciated that you included videos of the songs you featured.
Shirley, check out this twisted bit of animation. I hadn't seen this, yet.
she loves you yeah yeah yeah they changed the world!! music wise!! wonderful research I learned a lot reading this!!
Or... "Maybe I'm amazed at the you're with me all the time..."
Elvis was big, no doubt (no pun intended - maybe a little), but didn't touch the beatles for historical/cultural impact.
Shirley,
I liked your hub. You had an interesting selection of cuts, some which I have not heard in a while.
I was 10 when they brought out She Loves You. Love Me Do and Please Please Me were already out there, but She Loves You converted a whole generation. I couldn't afford albums, but bought all the singles (45s on vinyl) and still have them, in their original Parlophone paper sleeves. The first album I bought was Sgt Pepper, and I still have my white album with the original poster and photographs. Your hub brought back some great memories!
Okay: WOW I was bored and hit hottest hubs and there it was and I come here and I have been leaving you hanging.
DEEP CUTS: Songs that were NOT radio singles but were as good OR BETTER. (i.e. The Better and Rarer a Song is, The DEEPER the Cut. Get it?)
If you like Led Zeppelin, then the classic DEEP CUT would be Hey hey What Can I Do? which was not on any album but rather appeared on the B-Side of the 7-Inch single for IMMIGRANT SONG. When classic rock station DJs started playing that B-Side on the radio people freaked out. Now 20 years later, Hey Hey What can I Do is readily available on mp3 and exposed as a money track so it NO LONGER that DEEP a Cut. The next Deep Cut for Zeppelin is Hots on for Nowhere.
As the generations change so does the meaning. Some lazy DJs will say that a DEEP CUT is any song by a band that doesn't make it onto their Greatest Hits album.
p.s. I believe BOB DYLAN hosts a show on the DEEP CUTS channel over at XM Radio.
Regarding YOUR List every one is a DEEP CUT EXCEPT Norwegian Wood which is too widely known for me but it WASN'T A Single so yeah it technically it is too.
I just know that I have 50 Essential Beatles Songs on 2 Discs Just 4 my gigs and I'll bet the Beatlmaniacs would have a lot more ideas on how to fill a third disk.
Whew!
Deep Cuts? Love it! I am turning 40 this year, so the Beatles are my era (sort of - LOL). I have been spending about 20 minutes with this Hub Shirley. Very Cool. Steph
"Beatles man or Elvis man? ...Elvis" -pulp fiction
I was never a big beatles fan myself but this was fun to read Shirley
I'm with DJ - I want more Deep Cuts!!! Excellent Hub, Shirley.
The Beatles are Eternal. Not sure all their influence was good for us, but they defintely had and have a huge impact. I've got a secret.....tho.....
drum roll......
I swooned over Dean Martin. Danced to the Beatles; fell in LOVE with Dino....I just know he was singin' strait to my teenage heart.
Walker, that cartoon was a trip. I saw a beatles tribute band the other night. They are called Abbey road. They were pretty good.
I believe I wore the white album down to one long scratch . Some 8 tracks I played till they broke , took the tape apart and taped it back together with scotch tape (yes, possible; for a poor country kid lol) I believe there are full length embeds of Yellow Submarine videos somewhere .
I'm back, Shirley, from my mini vacation that went by waaaay to fast! I went to my sister's summer home in Cape Cod to relax and celebrate 2 family members birthdays.
The walls in my nephew's room where I was assigned sleeping quarters were plastered with Beatle posters. I stayed up very late reading from his collection of Beatle books so I guess you could say I spent the night with 'our boys'. I was in 7th heaven and wishing you were here to join in the fun. LOL
This year at Loyola College my nephew Tyler became a Beatle fan. We had lots to talk about. When I told him I used to listened to 'Norwegian Wood' every night before I went to sleep, he ducked out on me rather quickly. I began to think maybe I was boring him. Moments later I heard a familiar song from the next room. It was 'our boys' singing 'Norwegian Wood' followed by an entire afternoon of Beatle tunes.
Tyler came back for more. We talked about the Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. I read in his Beatle Book that the crime rate in the United States had decreased considerably that night. Everyone was home in front of their t.v. sets. I also told him how angry I was when John Lennon was murdered by that bleepity bleepity bleep. I was mad, not only for killing one of 'our boys' but also for scarring my cousin's family name (Chapman). I could not erase from my young mind the name of that very sickly f.n.a.hole.
At birthday cake time, I gave my brother-in-law Bob the birthday card I told you I found in the 'Bangladesh album set'. The card had a big peach on the front that said "you are the pick of the crop". It was the very first birthday card Bob gave my sister Patty when they were dating. I remember years ago telling Bob how my sister was the only girl in her high school drafting class and the boys called her 'Peachy By Bo' (don't ask!). I guess I was a bit of a trouble maker back then but that is why Bob picked out the peach card for her birthday. We figured out that the card is about 35 years old. Boy, did we have some laughs.
I can hardly wait to get my hands on more treasures in the basement. I shall return...until then!!!!
Thanks Shirley for not scratching my eyes out. We must give peace a chance!!!!
Phew!! I made it here!!
I had bean meaning to pop by here but due to PC probs my PC keeps crashing when there are lots of vids on page! I have another temp PC:)
I now forgot what i wanted to to say! :(
hasta la vista, baby:)
Shirley, I was wondering if you have seen the movie "Across the Universe". I've seen it now 3 times and think you would love it too. It's a musical film that incorporates 33 Beatle songs. It has a great story line taking place in the innocent mid 60's to the later politically charged years. Some of the Beatle songs in this movie are:
Girl,
All You Need Is Love,
Don't Let Me Down
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Helter Skelter
All My Loving
Hold Me Tight
When I'm 64
I Want to Hold Your Hand
A Little Help From My Friends
It Won't Be Long
Maxwell's Silver Hammer
Let It Be
Come Together
If I Fell
Why Don't We Do It In The Road
Revolution
She's So Heavy
Dear Prudence
Blue Jay Way
Oh Darling
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
and probably more including of course "Across the Universe"
I give this movie a thumbs up.
Just wondering what happened to my last comment. For some reason it didn't post. Maybe had something to do with the thunder and lightning here or else my flight to flee cuz I was scared. In my frenzy to escape PC I probably forgot to hit post.
Just looking at the Master DJ's list of songs. He said anything after his list of songs is a deep cut. Just got me thinking what could those songs be. If I find out I'll let you know.
NASA broadcast "Across The Universe" out into space. Wow, I didn't know that. I would have almost cried with you.
I just watched that sick animated youtube of Maxwell's Silver Hammer. That was soooo sick. I laughed foolishly and secretly loved it. Anything Beatle is beautiful. I am sick. Are you sick too Shirley? I noticed that you watched it twice!!! LOL
Love this! I am a huge Beatles fan too- starting at age 6 in 1969 when I wore out a copy of Sgt Pepper on the stereo in the living room...Great clips and great song choices. I've always liked Hey Bulldog and Dr Robert and also one you don't mention, And Your Bird Can Sing.
And lots of others too, of course
Great hub still. Just wanted to let you know Mr. Marmalade had a question for you over on one of Funnebone's hubs about the Beatles comment. I told him I thought it was a joke, which I think it is. However, I was curious and googled it and found some very interesting results. Now I want to know if it is a joke or not. Sorry if this is a silly question, but some websites are saying that one Beatles song has another meaning behind it.
Funnebone's latest hub.
Shirley, "Do You Want To Know A Secret"? - "Do You Promise Not To Tell"?
"That Boy" "He's A Real Nowhere Man"
Great "Besame Mucho" video. Those boys can really "Twist and Shout".
Besame Mucho - translated into English; "Kiss Me A Lot" also know by translators; "Kiss Me Much" and "Kiss Me Again and Again"
This is a great hub with great content and some really good comments. I an older guy who actually learned to play guitar to early Beatles tunes so they made a very significant impact on me.
Aikidk01 did you learn to play "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"?
Shirley, the treasure chest in the basement has been opened. I will return soon to reveal. Sorry to keep you in suspense! Gotta run!
While you "Wait"! Here are some Beatle memorable quotes: "From Me To You"
Being "Funny Boys":
"Will the people in the cheaper seats clap your hands? And the rest of you, if you'll just rattle your jewelry." - John Lennon, 1963, at the high point of the group's set during the Royal Variety Performance before members of the British Royal Family.
"We ice skate." - George Harrison, 1964, when asked by a reporter "What do you do when you're cooped up in a hotel room between shows?"
"You." - John Lennon, 1964, when asked by a reporter "What have you seen that you like best about our country?"
"I don't know, it must be the weather." - John Lennon, 1964, when asked by a reporter "Why do you think you're so popular all of a sudden?"
"So this is America. They must be out of their minds." Ringo Starr, circa 1964, arriving in America for the first time.
"I call it Arthur" - George Harrison, 1964, when asked what the Beatles called their haircuts.
Ringo's Birthday Wish List: "Peace & Love"
Published in Beatle News
25th June 2008
Ringo was recently asked by Access Hollywood what he hoped to receive for his upcoming birthday (July 7th). Ringo's answer was unconventional, he said, "just more Peace & Love." Then he expanded his wish further, "it would be really cool if everyone, everywhere, wherever they are, at noon on July 7 make the peace sign and say "Peace & Love."
(Mark your calendars and set your timers, Ladies and Gentlemen) (while your at it why not just take the day off of work! your excuse of course, "it's Ringo's Birthday)(Let's all "Come Together" July 7th, High Noon- at least I can spell it right Shirley!!! LOL and while your still at it why not just stay home til July 10th and celebrate Shirley Anderson's Birthday, too!!! Happy Birthday Ringo and Shirley.
My husband just got home from work and wants to know if I would like to go see Beetlejuice, an outside concert. Could there be a better way to celebrate the 4th of July eve. I think not!!! Oh, you must be envious now Shirley. Gotta run. Lots of preparations going on today for 4th of july. See you in a day or two.
The Greatest Band EVER!!!
I just became a fan of Yours.
Shirley and Dottie1 - Interesting you mentioned My Guitar Gently Weeps. I think the world of all of the Beatles and think that George had a talent that was never fully realized. My early favories featuring George were "Just to Dance with You" and "I Need You".
Actually I the guitar charts I learned from all those years back were the earliest of the Beatles songs such as Anna, Chains, and Twist and Shout which were covers of previously recorded songs.
It is quite interesting to see the wide range of songs mentioned here. My favorite songs were those that were earlier in their careers although my "taste" has evolved to include all of them.
If you get cable TV there is an Ovation Channel series called "The Rhythm of Life" hosted by Sir George Martin (a name I'm sure you recognize). He interviews many people including Sir Paul McCartney as he discusses the concepts of Melody and Harmony.
I always enjoy Let It Be, and I also sing along to Til There Was You (yes I have a soft mushy side). But I'll Follow The Sun is one of my very favorite songs. I also have a friend (you know him), who considered naming his daughter for the song Michelle, My Belle.
WOW -Great hub - love it. Bookmarked it so I can come back and listen often. Also forwarding it to all my friends! Thanks for all the work you put into this...
David
Hey Shirley, my husband John and I had a lot of fun reminiscing about our collection of over 100 various albums in the treasure chest. John recalled giving a few of his Beatle albums to his brother Paul to complete his collection of every Beatle album and every 45 record. Paul is a true Beatlemaniac. I read a comment above about considering naming their daughter Michelle. Well Paul did name his first daughter Michelle and when she got married, she and her dad danced to the Beatle song "Michelle". It was perfect for them!
The Beetlejuice concert got rained out Fri. evening. Postponed to Sun. night. Hope to make it then. Weathermen talking rain! :(
I am going to start another post for what was revealed in the chest. Kinda long. See you there.
Instead of Michelle, we went with Sherry. It flowed better with the last name.
Sorry Shirley. Sherry is from the Four Seasons. But I heard they were all Beatles fans, if that helps. ;)
I do have a son named Christopher. I could change his name to Rocky Raccoon, if you like. He doesn't get beaten up all that much, right now anyway.
OMG, that fly sings just like her, strange shreiking noises. That was a good one!!
Oh by the way, I bought you and Ringo something special for your birthdays next week. Check it out. Hope you like it!!!
That's one talented fly! It was much better than listening to Yoko!
I think these songs were written for Yoko: "The Fool on the Hill" and "She's Got the Devil in her Heart".
"Any Time At All". I'm glad you liked it. You'll look like "Sexy Sadie" and Ringo will look like "Mean Mr. Mustard" in those shirts.
Shirley, I am so happy to see the success of this hub. I am astonished that you haven't seen Across the universe yet. You have to see the US vs. John Lennon Doc too. It's the only doc about him that you actually learn something new in it.
July 7th (High Noon) Ringo's Wish
(Peace Sign) P E A C E & L O V E
(Ditto above) HAPPY BIRTHDAY RINGO!
I'm signing too!
Good Job on this Hub Shirley - The Beatles Album Cuts - 96 today!!!
NOT GOOD ENOUGH!!!! 100 for tribute to Ringo - our gift to him!!!
"Come Together" Right Now! "We Can Work It Out"
I would've shot you the peace sign, but I have no fingers! Peaceful thoughts will have to do.
Happy Birthday Ringo. I love you, yes I do!!!!
Happy Birthday To You. Happy Birthday to You. Happy Birthday Dear RINGO. Happy Birthday to you! Peace and Love from the Happy Birthday Quartet!!!!!
I just signed the card Shirley. Hope your sending it first class!
OMG!!! It's Ringo!!!! Our Birthday Boy!!!!
Shirley "I Don't Want To Spoil the Party" but I know you would want to read this thread in the forum.
http://hubpages.com/forum/topic/6266#post66014
Come back here after, I have something that will bring cheers!
Today in the Sun Times was an article about Ringo wishing that everyone today would just give "peace a chance". Linked is a video from our Beloved John singing "Give Peace A Chance" - I hope you love it as much as I did.
After I posted, I noticed there were two different threads to that forum and that you had commented. Sorry!!
Last night I finally got to see the outside concert "Beatlejuice" and then some fireworks. It was better than awesome. That perhaps accounts for my over exuberance today.
Ringo is being interviewed on 'Larry King Live' tonight. Do you get that where you live?
Ringo, Ringo, Little Star. How I wonder where you are. Wherever you are Ringo, Happy Birthday.
Good Idea to end the night. A glass of wine and to bed with Ringo. Or was it to bed with a glass of wine and a birthday for Ringo! I'm confused, I think I'll go have a glass of bed or is that a bed of wine! Good night Shirley. Good night Ringo.
Shirley and Dottie -
A lot of great chat about Ringo...Found a great Youtube video of George Harrison and Paul Simon singing Here Comes the Sun on Saturday Night Live. You may have already see this one, but if not....
This was an excellent hub, i am a beatles fan and every time I hear their music it is a trip back through time.
Love the Beatles page! I actually saw them in concert at the Hollywood Bowl when I was 12 yrs old. I have always loved the album cuts that radio stations tend to not play! Although some of the songs you posted do not fall into that category, there are some others that I had remembered in decades.
I HAVE A DREAM!!!!
Start Your Engine,please. Me and you Shirley, if you like of course, can meet at the border of US and Canada and fly to London to see the Aug. 20, 2008 Fab Four History Tour. (the only tour that delivers the complete history of the Beatles). When we get to London, we can stop by Compu-smart's house for further direction. I think he could use some cheering up right now.
Get this! The tour is only $2,500.00 not including airfare. What happened to the $4.00 concert price back yonder! For $4.00 I can only drive to the end of my driveway. Maybe Catlyn would like to come too. Lucky girl saw the Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl.
So, we can sell our homes!!! Well, I did say it was just a DREAM!!!
LOL LOL LOL! Wait, I'm on the floor!
I forgot to tell you, the $2,500.00 included hotel. So we could sneak Compu-smart into our room. He's a kitty, right? What is it you call him, Furry Bum?????
Now that hubby is working 3 jobs he won't even know I'm gone. He won't need a house, he pretty much sleeps in work. I'm a new woman now Tippy!!! Last child off to college soon. It's good to think outside the box. Like Bob Ewing said in one of his hubs, "Think above the ground".
Furry Bum, Furry Pants, what's the difference? LOL. I told you I haven't learned to think above ground yet!
Hey Gals! I will put my Beatles concert ticket stub on Ebay for auction and see how much money I can get for it! That would be an adventure for sure, going to England for the concert! The tix price for a box seat, mind you, was $5.50 back in the day!
Hey, look at you, at the top of the hot hubs
Shirley , congratulations, i can see it now why somebody asked you for a hub; simply because you are that good.I am a beatles fan. They are a bunch of genius musicians and i always love the music and the song writing (though for me some songs do not contain a positive influence or message esp. for young people). But nonetheless they're very good.
One thing that catches me is the song "Norwegian Wood"(one if your fav cuts). I'm a bass player one of my bass heroes is Victor wooten. I invite you to listen to his own rendition of this song using a finger tapping technique on the bass. It's really amazing and beautiful.
I agree about paul as the coolest (humored as dead,lol). He is one of the most influential bass player in the world not technical but melodic, a sure genius. His style attracted me because i am a melodically-inclined bass player.
Ringo...hmm I read it somewhere that he is the only beatle that did not made it in the 100 most influential people in the UK. (correct me if i'm wrong).Your very good shirley keep it up.
Very interesting. Not only was it fun to read about your take on some "less popular" Beatles songs, it is also a hoot to read through the comments. I have an idea that are a few folks that either were, or easily could have been, among the screaming fans that made it so little could often be heard at a Beatles concert.
Thanks for the great post.
I don't know where you ever got the idea I was putting a hub together on the boys. That honor is definately yours. "Don't Let Me Down".
"Good Day Sunshine", Happy Birthday, Shirley.
"Mr Postman" came in "Through the Bathroom Window" to deliver a special gift to you from "your boys".
ooops!
Hi Shirley,
Nice hub... i really liked it!
I have a hub about a very unique contest i'm doing at my company... take a look at my hub: clifinar-clifinar.
Cheers,
Daniel
What a string of comments...Wow! But, Shirley, what a hub!!! Kind of glad that I'm just now reading it through...got the DJ top 50 and Dottie1's "Across the Universe" soundtrack list! Fantastic! Raised my daughter's on this music and they still love it!
Thanks for the shout out in the newsletter email. I'm so glad that you enjoyed this. Make sure you email me when you make part 2.
PS - If you haven't seen "Across The Universe" by the end of July I shall call you a true blue Beatle fan no more ;)
Shirley if you can't find it at the rental store I'll talk with the airlines to see if they can show it on our flight to London in Aug. when we go to see The Fab Four History Tour. Maybe DJ will give you a three week extension for mentioning him in the newsletter.
FANTASTIC! I am really getting excited now. We have a looong flight on the plane so thought we could learn some Cockney Rhyming Slang. http://hubpages.com/hub/Cockney-rhyming-slang
Oops Double Post.
The Beatles aren't from my generation, but I still love 'em!
"Let it Be" is one of my absolute FAVORITES! (When I was a kid, I liked the Sesame Street version... "Letter B." :)
Great hub!
ProCW
:) It was a great "beetles" spoof... or is that Beatles... guess you'll have to look at it to see... :)
i am shocked that someone your age even knows about the beatles..did you go listening to your granpops records young lady?
I am a great Beatles fan from my high school days. At that stage of my life I said the Beatles will be to modern (1960 modern that is) music ,what Beethoven was to music in his day. I feel somewhat vindicated.
i had all the vinyl Lp's (iand some seven singles) ncluding the original Revolver LP cover. My ex unfortunately claimed the lot and I think she sold them in a knick nack shop!
fANTASTIC HUB! Wondefrul comments.
Hi Shirley,
I thought you might like this list of Beatle Songs (CD titles, album titles & composer)
http://www.keepandshare.com/doc/view.php?u=13165&a
(Boy I miss it in here)!!!!!!
Never fear Dottie's here! Here's a link on how to sell uterus, eggs, kidney, liver, spleen, plasma, sperm, hair and body. Did you know that you can lease some of your parts? I don't recommend selling your body!!!
According to Compu-smart's legal vs. illegal downloading hub (not sure at the moment what the correct title is) , my daughter is illegally downloading her music. And she is downloading from my IP address so I may end up in prison with you. I will be more than happy to help you with the license plates. If we don't make it to Compu-smart's house cuz we are both in prison, do you think he would come to bail us out?
BTW, I've sold my home and looking forward to prison for shelter. See you there!!!!
I'm trying to type, but I'm laughing way too hard. My hubby is asleep and I don't want to wake him up, NOT at midnight!!! I'll have to catch up with you tomorrow. Have a good sleep!
Hey Shirley,
Denim prison design sounds fabulous. If they don't have denim perhaps they will have the Shrek or Martha Steward Jail Fashions available.
I don't mind Comp baking us a cake (nail file idea, perfect) but I'm staying away from his cookies!
Do you think we get to pick what prison we go to? I think a prison in London would be perfect. In case Comp doesn't have the finance to bail us out for the Beatle History Tour, I think he would be more than grateful to take us both out on a day pass!
My hubby has been cool about this whole plan! Now that we don't have a house, he will stay at the Hospitality Hotel at my daughter's new college. The students can practice all their new skills on him. I am such a good wife!!!
Ya know, everything seems to be falling nicely into place. Like you said, "with a good marketing plan, our charismatic personalities are sure to take us far!
I think the only thing left to do now is contact Comp and let him know we will be staying at the Wandsworth Prison at: 17 Heathfield Rd London, SW18 3HR, United Kingdom +44 20 88744377
All he has to do is pick us up at the Visitor Center on August 20th and we are well on our way to the Beatles History Tour.
We are brilliant Shirley!!!!!!
PS - Don't forget your Shrek jammies!
with feet def. Order me a pair too please. I'm so excited!
Trap door too of course. We can buy the Beatles p.j.'s in London to have autographed in case we run into Paul and/or Ringo. If we don't see them, well then maybe we can get Compu-Smart to sign our jammies.
I LOVE THE BEATLES! My favourite is John Lennon i love him and all he represents, your a great writer, i love you hubs, but this is my favourite, the beatles are incredible artists, individually and in their group, GREAT HUB! x
P.S You might like my hub dedicated to the old school tunes, it's actually called old school tunes, it's only my fourth hub but i love that music so much i just had to write about it! x
Re: Jammies with feet; are they available with four feet, or is it just the two?
Small, but with an extra large trap door. I'm still carrying some butter tart weight, you know.
I still wear my old speedo to the beach! Even though my six-pack abs look more like a keg, now. All the lady jackalopes love it! My wife...not so much.
This just makes me want to own every single Beatles song in existence. They're non-hits are just as good as their hits. It's great to hear some of the lesser known tunes rather than the played out favorites. I'll have to dig out a couple and start listening again...
Woops pressed the submit button twice.
Omg!! You guys "Shirley and Dottie are hilllaaarrioouuusss!" Lmao!!
Re! cake in file..I have lots of experience in this!;) haha, and its funny to actually see someone type my full address where i used to live on many occasions before i turned into an angel!!:)
Regards signing things!, im used to signing things and not with my name so it looks like i can help u out with this, Just, in-case we don't bump into any Beatles!!
I lookl forward to your arrivals and why have cookies, when we can have tea n crumpets;)
Mmm yeah!!;)
Big day tomorrow Shirley. Are you ready?
It is the 20th today, isn't it. I better go check. Yup today is Wednesday Aug. 20th! The tour is in 2008 right? I didn't know today was my birthday but I guess it is! Want to come over for dinner?
Shirley I knew somehow you'd show up. So I was at the visitor center in London and waiting but I don't know what Compu-smart looks like. I was hoping you could help me out. If you both show up dinner will be at his house. o.k.
Thanks Shirl, I'm hangin on. Take your time! :)
This is awesome! I am a long time Beatles fan also. I love these deep cuts and funny how I still remember the words! Keep up the great articles. You have inspired me to write some different articles outside of the box.
Shirley I've been eating those peanuts for 6 days now!!!! Where are you? I need to eat some real food!!!! Come home whereever you are?
I'm very very impressed with what I see here.
I love the Beatles!! I couldn't believe they had 47 number 1 hits in a just a short 6 1/2 year time frame.. my favorite piece on this list has to be the "one after 909" Great stuff! I'm sure that generations from now they will still be as legendary as they are today.
I just listened to "Saw Her Standing There", "Revolution", and "Hey Jude". Who wouldn't have a great time at a wine festival accompanied with Beatle songs.
Shirley, I knew I wanted to tell you something else about Stoneham, MA when we were chatting and that is also where I saw Beatle Juice at the old Stoneham Theatre which has been all made over and where I used to go to the cinema as a kid! ~Dottie~
Hey Shirley - I know I read your comment above 2 weeks ago and left you a comment but I guess I forgot to post it.
lol about the lady spilling wine on you. I hope you had a change of clothes with you! You poor thing!
Been thinking of you lately as the trees are really starting to come into full colorful beauty. Isn't it such a beautiful sight. I really do wish that we could all get together this weekend and jump in the leaves. That would be fun!
I am a day late but wanted to stop by the Beatle Hub to wish John Lennon and son Sean a HAPPY BIRTHDAY which was yesterday Oct. 9th. John, you are still and will be forever etched in my heart.
Happy Thanksgiving to you Shirley. When you have a chance maybe you can drop by comp's birth site and wish John Lennon another happy birthday. There is a party going on over there right now. Hope you can make it.
though beatles is too early for my age, but still I love their music.
Awesome!We had a Beatles cover band come through Phoenix last year, didn't get to go. They played at a casino. I really missed out- have to go next time. Great hub!
Wow it's Beatlemania all over again! I love the Beatles and i have always believed that head bobbing is cooler than head banging! Hope you'd hub more on great music and artists of the past.
I have many favourite Betle songs but from the top of my head, it's gott be Till There Was You! Thanks for this great hub, I'm glad it resurfaced :D
Yes this is all good...........good hub. It was a great era with the Beatles............not Beetles. I remember and always looked forward for their next number one hit on the charts. This was all of the time in the Beatle recording days. Never failed always Number one on the charts. Maybe sometimes three of their hits the top five.
Thank you for the research that went into this hub. I'm older than I look and remember the rooftop session. It was primarily recorded for "Get Back" and shown on BBC Top of the Pops when most people know the Beatles were breaking up. The camera crew were the only official spectators but people from the other buildings got a great free show.
keep up these great hubs coming!
Ok.. just ran across this great hub... Love the Beatles...so much. Thank you for such a good read, Shirley. Love your style of writing. Keep em coming.
I love the rooftop performance. I agree, different times - you don't see many musicians with green pants nowadays! Get Back is one that I listen to all the time, especially the live rooftop version which is on YouTube.
George Harrison did a strange thing with the song Blue Jay Way. Nearing the end. a chorus of voices sings "Don't Belong, Don't Belong", over and over. There are times however, when they are singing "Don't be long."
Or is it the other way around? It probably wasn't accidental. Listen to it again. Maybe it is just too obvious.
47 number one hits! Has any other band ever come close that number! I bet when the Beetles broke up in 1970 ALOT of people cried! Very good and informative:)
Awesome! Let's Rock! Can i share this post in http://www.joyholdem.com's blog http://blog.joyholdem.com
You have named some of my favorites, here!! One of the jazz bands I played in during the late 80's did an instrumental arrangement of Norwegian Wood. The melody has been in my head ever since. If you like jazz at all, Stan Kenton also did a very good cover of Hey Jude. I know that's not a deep cut, but it's another of my faves. Thumbs up! If I could double thumbs up, I would!!
