Sell Your Writing to Fiction Markets
Abyss & Apex Magazine of Speculative Fiction looks for fiction and poetry. Short stories from 1,501 to 10,000 words pays a flat $75, while shorts up to 1,500 words pays $ .05 per word. They do quarterly readings, and the next one is in August.
Adbusters is a mag with a lot of pep and a distinct voice. They claim to 'relish all truly political materials'. They accept different formats - video, audio, short flash, and will consider almost anything, including fiction, as long as it flows with their mission to change global perspective on consumer culture. If your story packs an ecological whollap, or lets activists take over the world, this is the place for you. One caution: response time is slow.
Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine does not require querying, you can send a completed manuscript and they will read it. Pretty much every mystery genre is considered, but they prefer stories that are less than 12,000 words. This one has to be done by snail mail, no electronic submissions allowed.
Asimov's Science Fiction has been around a long time and has won tons of awards, Hugo and Nebula. They like 'character oriented' sci-fi, rather than fantasy/sword & sorcery type of stories. Just read their guidelines, which provide a really clear idea of what they will buy. Payment is made upon acceptance, and runs $ .06 a word for beginners who submit work up to 7,500 words, $ .05 per word for stories longer than 12,500 words, and $450 for stories between those lengths. They will buy poetry, which pays $1 per line, and should not exceed 40 lines. Will accept work from unpublished authors.
The Atlanticis another snail mail deal, but a fantastic addition to your portfolio if your story is accepted and printed in their special newstand magazine. Atlantic will consider unsolicited manuscripts (bonus!), and suggest that you read back issues to get a flavour of how and what to write, and keep your prose to between 2,000 and 6,000 words.
AustinMama works primarily but not exclusively, with local Austin writers. According to the guidelines, risky fiction makes Mama feel fine, and she'd like to see it. This publication prefers to work with experienced writers, and buys one-time purchasing and archiving rights. Payment is $35 to $50.

You have to do a hub on how to write that killer query letter :)
Great hub!
Great now we have to pull our own finger out and try and find the talent to do the job of writing good copies.
Oh my gosh, food for thought. Any comments for the aussie peeps?
Thanks for the info- and good thought from Eileen
Thanks for your diligence in helping your fellow writer. This hub is now bookmarked.
Good hints.Perhaps more useful for American/American based writers.
good information. infogoaround is also a good place to sumit your article.
So, should you concentrate on one subject of writing or write whatever suits your fancy, like I do?
Thank you, Shirley, for this info. I have a hub about UFO/USOs and I think I'll shop it at AfterDark. Thanks again!
I will. Just submitted it, about 5 mins ago, so I'll just wait and see!
Have you read the piece? Do you think they'll like it? It's called "Are These the First Earthlings?"
I do love being a writer but haven't had the nerve before to write query to letters to print or online magazines. I guess I never think my writing is good enough.
I am looking at one website thought that is for women. A lot of the articles are very similar to what you can see on Associated Content or Helium or HubPages. I seem to write well about food so I might do something along those lines.
I just signed up for WritersMarket.com yesterday :)
What I really want to do is end up writing full time and being able to quit my job which I feel interferes with my writing... I know that is a hard thing but I definitely want to try...
Just love your writing hubs! 100% helpful! :)
Shirley, thank you for the nice compliment and for the "amoeba" correction, I always mess that up. Hopefully it will be corrected if they run the piece.
Yes, I did edit out certain things (including the note referring to the video) as well as the videos themselves. I wasn't aware of a word count match, so I'll just have to hope for the best.
Great information - I am passing your hub on to several friends who write - am sure it will be helpful to them.
Thanks for the info.
Writing a query letter is the subject of many online articles and books. I wrote an informal one to the local magazine for which I freelance several months ago. Now, I publish there on a monthly basis. It differs depending on your audience. But, I am no expert!
I have totally gone off course here... Shirley, this is a wonderful, helpful hub. I am thinking about trying the baby & child magazine. If I do, I will let you know and how it goes. Thanks! Steph
Shirley: Your enthusiasm and support for other writers comes through so nicely! I like being around positive people like you. :) My niche is spiritual articles, so its a small audience. I have made it my goal to submit an article to a magazine this week thanks to this hub. Yay! Would love a hub on query letters, which I dislike writing.
This is really good information.
Thank-You
This is another great list and thanks once again Shirley! I am going to investigate a couple of these most useful links.
You have done all of us writers a great service with this hub! Thanks for sharing -
As the wife of a small business owner and mom of 6, one of whom is in college, I am limited in my options for working outside the home. I have been doing whatever I can to use my skills in writing, art and photography to earn a little extra cash for the family. But it is a lot slower than I anticipated! I hope one or two of these will pan out for me!
Again, thanks for sharing!
Great stuff here!!
This article will help so many people (including me) who are always looking to find reputable places to write online and i normally disregard lots of these articles purely because i don't think they are reputable company's, but YOU reassure me they are good as i have seen much of your work!!
Thanks as always for helping new and old writers alike start and expand their works!.
ps..I loved the psycho films and above vid!:)
These are great ideas for selling my writing. Thanks.
Great list there I thank you.
Kudos once again, Shirley on another excellent hub full of helpful info! If you keep writing these hubs, you are going to make me take the plunge I swore I never would LOL.
Bonnie
I'll throw my hat in and thank you as well for your top-notch information. Can't wait to read your previous hubs on the topic.
I just got the chance to check out that video!! very funny in a bizzare kind of way lol,
I hope your not giving me hints! lol
J/K:)
Great Stuff....thanks!
What great articles! I have written for several years now (mostly blogs, etc. and I just joined Hubpages) and have finally taken the plunge in writing a book. I sit at home most nights in my dusty old garret typing away at my first non-fiction book (okay, it's really in my air-conditioned, fully-furnished bedroom, but it's more fun to imagine it as a dusty garret). I am officially joining your fan club so that I can continue to be inspired. Keep up the good work!
So where's that query letter hub? I'm chomping at the bit, here. Gotta get this new career thing rollin', you know? By the way, this hub, as well as part 1 are awesome!
Must be the unfortunate name I was given. What can I say? I'm just an average Jackalope, tryin' to get along in this cruel world.
I enjoyed the hub very informative!
I've read several of your writing-related articles, they are really informative. Must have taken you ages to research them all!
Not surprised it took a while, it's a massive list.
Lol - sounds a bit like, "I'll never drink again...."
WOW!!! You put a lot of time into this HUB, it definetlyshows!!! I found the information extremely helpful! I became a fan of yours and rated you UP too, please join my fanclub as well! Keep up the excellent work! Barry ;)
I bookmarked it too!
Good list, I bookmarked this too so I can try some of these out. Unfortunately, the Coast to Coast one looks like they don't take submissions. At least I can't a submission page on their site. That's really too bad, I could come up with a lot of nonsense about UFO's and Bigfeet.
Thanks shirley I really enjoyed all the info and found some great stuff keep on girl
Nice Hub, Shirley. I've started looking through Writer's Market . . . available at the library . . . for places to submit. I need to start writing magazine articles - especially with the amount of info I have online!
Hi Shirley! I'm a new hubber that was referred by the great Pheori. All of your content and you as a writer, I would say, is simply irreplaceable. Along with the rest of your articles, this one is awesomely informative and I really can't commend it more!
Thank you sooo much for lighting the path which I have feared. I don't have expectations so that I may avoid disappoinment, and yet, there is a glimmer of hope shimmering through the darkness of my ignorance. Cheers.
Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing this. I am bookmarking it in my "writing sites" section for further reference. Some of these look quite interesting and all are new to me.
