The Beatles and I - My Introduction to the Fab Four
66The Beatles and I
It was early 1964 when I was first introduced to The Beatles. I hadn't turned ten yet, but I still remember all the awe and emotion associated with learning who the Fab Four was. It's been easy to remember, I've carried those same feelings for the past four plus decades. Believe it or not though, it did not happen immediately, as I didn't understand what was going on. It did not take long for me to get it, however. Once I did, that was it for me. I made a life time commitment.
It's The Beatles and I, all the way.

The Beatles and I - "A Beginning" - My Introduction to the Fab Four via Lillian
My younger sister, parents and I lived with my paternal grandparents, upstairs over top of the Deluxe Diner, which was and still is, situated in the tiny hamlet of New Sarum. Grandma and Grandpa owned the Diner, my parents worked in it and my sister and I stayed out of the way. Well, mostly.
One day, I was sitting on the steps going down into the kitchen, for no reason in particular. I was a shy child, but liked to come out from behind my books and Barbies once in a while to peek at the outside world. The only other person in the kitchen just then was Lillian, one of the local girls that cooked and waitressed for my grandparents.
Lillian was pencil thin and wore very tight skirts. She was tall, so I suppose she had good legs, but I don't know. I was a kid and a girl. I really didn't know or care about such things. I do know that she always crossed them when she read the paper, and the day I'm talking about held no exception to that. She sat there, long legs crossed, leaning back against the dumbwaiter. Her highly teased bleach blonde hair was visible over that day's edition of the newspaper. While I thought that a funny sight, it was not nearly as comical as when she pulled the paper away from her face.
Poor Lillian was nearly blind, even though she probably wasn't twenty yet. She had to wear glasses to see anything. Very large, very thick glasses, what we used to call, 'coke bottle glasses'. They made her blue eyes and masscaraed lashes enormous. I mean B-I-G! I never was quite sure whether I was more amused than frightened, or the other way around.
All that aside, myopic Lil liked to read the newspaper. That day, the one where it was just she and I in the Diner's kitchen, she read aloud to me one of the news items. I don't remember the exact wording. It was a report about a new music group from England. Apparently, they had arrived in North America and teenage girls were screaming and fainting over them before the four group members had even left the plane.
I'd never heard of such a thing. How silly. Crazy, really. I was confused, didn't understand at all, though I felt a bit stupid for not understanding.
"Have you seen them?" Lil was still looking at the paper but talking to me.
No, I hadn't seen them, didn't know what she was talking about. She showed me the picture that accompanied the article. I looked at a black and white photograph of four men in suits, standing on that stair thingy that they push up to the airplane doors so people can get out and down.
"They're called, The Beatles." Like that made everything clear.
I was still perplexed. They needed haircuts, boys didn't have long hair. I still didn't understand what the big deal was. Lillian seemed far more impressed than me, so I figured that it must be a grown up thing, you know, something that had you had to old (at least 17) to comprehend. Basically, I dismissed the whole business and went to hang out with Barbie.
Little did I know that in a couple of weeks, those long haired guys would become one of the biggest, longest lasting loves of my life.
The Beatles and I - Ed Sullivan Gives Me "A Taste of Honey"
Every Sunday Night, I watched the Ed Sullivan Show. I was glued to that table top RCA for the whole hour that show was on, hoping to see Topo Gigio or Lambchop. Sometimes, Jimmy Durante was good for a laugh, too.
One Sunday night, about two weeks after the episode in the kitchen with Lillian, I was laying on the couch, paying rapt attention to what Ed was saying. I didn't want to miss hearing that evening's line up of guests.
I don't have any memory of the exact date, only have it in the mental archives as being February 1964. I looked it up. It was my sister's sixth birthday, the 9th. I'm not sure how I lucked out having the T.V. to myself in light of it being her birthday, but I did. I seem to recall that she was off to the side somewhere playing quietly.
So it was that I was alone with Ed, comfortable on the couch while crossing my fingers that I would get to see that cutest little mouse in the whole wide world, Topo Gigio. Was he on the show that evening? I haven't the faintest idea.
Ed Sullivan introduced that new group that Lillian had told me about, The Beatles. I heard someone coming up the wooden stairs from the kitchen in a hurry. I can't remember for sure, but I think it was my mom and maybe one other woman. They had read in the paper that the Fab Four was making an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show and didn't want to miss it. Me, I just wanted Topo Gigio and if that wasn't possible, than give me Sherry Lewis and Lambchop. I'd change my mind in about a second and a half.
Before the first chord was strummed, the audience started going wild. In fact, girls were screaming as soon as Ed mention The Beatles. What a strange thing all this was! I watched, trying to understand. Everyone else seemed to, I didn't why I wasn't getting it. Then it happened.
At the first sound of a guitar, I got chills. As they progressed to singing, I swung my legs to the floor, sitting up and leaning towards the set. The camera was showing close ups of their faces. My God they were beautiful! I was mesmerized. I was literally moved to tears. Pretty strong emotion for that age. I hadn't turned ten yet, but I was pretty sure that I had just fallen in love. What I didn't and couldn't know at the time was that those same reactions to The Beatles would never, ever change. My fate with them was sealed, my love a commitment.
Not a long time after my introduction to the Fab Four, I devised a plan to run away to England to marry Paul. You may think it silly, but I was convinced it was a good, solid plan. I even packed a bag and got up in the middle of the night in preparation to execute my brilliant, no-fail scheme. That's another story, though.
My love for the Boys has remained constant. I have memorabilia, music, books, but that's not what it's about for me. It's about how some part of me resonated and connected with The Beatles and their music that February night in 1964. It affected me deeply.
That's why it's The Beatles and I - forever.

You know you've got my thumbs up! :)
What a surprise! :)
Wonderful hub. I laughed about you just wanting to see Topo Gigio :) I have a Beatle's memory. I was having a birthday party...I think it was 7 or 8. I just remember that we were just sitting down to cake when the Beatles came on TV...everyone ran out of the room to see them leaving me alone with my cake.
My friends and I loved the Beatles, we used to pretend to be them. I usually got to be Paul, playing my tennis racket with my left hand.
Shirley,
The Beatles will always be a classic love affair! Their music rocks!
No, my birthday is November 29th. I still lived in Scotland than and we knew about the Beatles before the US did :)
I know it's totally unrelated but I saw Across the Universe yesterday. I loved it, the music made it
Oh no you don't. Paul is MINE! :D
Shirley, this was such a lovely read. Of course, I now see that everything you write is amazing. I loved the pictures, and I loved your saddle shoes. :) And I really enjoyed your first memory of the Beatles.
For some reason, I don't have a first memory of them. My first early memory of a band is watching the Jackson 5 on TV singing...i can't remember what they were singing. lol! Did they sing a song that goes...one bad apple don't spoil the whole bunch girl, gimme one more try before you give up on love...or something like that?
The Beatles I have many great memories of their music from the sixties and on, good read, thanks.
Ahem...the Osmonds had a song about One Bad Apple :) The Jackson Five did ABC and I want you back :)
Great bit of memoir. Luved it! Did you know that before they played in the US, the Beatles had played live over 12,000 times. Think Hamburg; 7 days a week, 8 to 12 hours a day. No wonder hey were so good.
1964? I not not even born then.
Great hub, Shirley! The Beatles' inaugural appearance on Ed Sullivan is one of those memories that I can't remember if I remember directly or just remember the Ed Sullivan Show and remember the Beatles, a so put the two together. I think I did see the show that night. It's become such a national memory!
I do remember "Meet the Beatles" was my first album. Those Lennon/McCartney harmonies got into my bloodstream and have stayed there ever since. I totally get your relationship with the Fab Four. I think it would be hard to find a person of "our generation" who doesn't share the same feelings!
Meet The Beatles Song List

Ok -- so do you have a favorite or least favorite Beatles album? Song? (so many to choose from)!
My favorite is "Here Comes The Sun".
My other favorites are "I Feel Fine", "Penny Lane", "Yellow Submarine", "The Ballad of John and Yoko" ...
Thanks for writing a hub on the Beatles. :)
I love Abbey Road and Rubber Soul albums. Quite a few on White Album, too.
With me it was the "Meet the Beatles" album. It was my brother's, but he soon abandoned for harder music. Good thing too. I still have it today. Topo Gigio was also my favorite! I couldn't wait for him t o come on Ed Sullivan.
What I find even more intriguing is your living in a diner. This is like my fantasy come true (especially with that hot, long-legged, myopic waitress, languidly crossing her legs as if to say, "you want 'em fried or scrambled!). Have you written about this? I want to read about it, and the "run away to marry Paul" is a must-write.
I'm going to get you a t-shirt that says: I went to England to marry Paul and all I got was this lousy fish and chips.
It's like we were seperated at birth or something, except you were the one who got to go live in the diner. I'm so jealous! Great work!
I love the Beatles and they are a great band. I love the nostalgia you express by including a autobiography and pictures here, which make the story even more real. I feel the same way about the Moody Blues as you do about the Beatles, so I can appreciate loving a band.
Well Shirley, I remember walking back from school to my friend's house as his brother had bought the single "I feel fine". Although previously I had heard that track on radio, that was the first time I really heard it on a full blooded hi-fi set up. The start of the song where it goes "dnnngggg-waewww" ... (I guess it was Paul McArtney on sitar) really puts me on a spell! ...gives me chills, I would say!
Here comes the sun is great to play just before sunrise. :)
Thanks for reminding me of "till my guitar gently weeps". I had completely forgotten it.
Perhaps you remember the American band called the Monkees, who at that time resembled the Beatles. They recorded tracks like "I am a believer" ... "the last train to Clarksville" ... and some other chart toppers.
:) :) :)
Hi Shirley, just left you an email saying I was on my way here. You must be wondering what happened. All these comments you have are grrreat! Had to read them all. Interesting to learn that about the Monkees being referred to as the Prefab four.
The Beatles were always my fav too and look what they did for us. In the other hub you wrote on the fab four we just had soooo much fun and became good friends, through the love of our boys, how about that...
Shirley, "do you want to know a secret"? I was so madly in love with the Beatles like you that I stole a Beatle record and got caught. My mom was really mad because I had the money to pay for it in my pocket but I wanted to save the money so I could buy another record later...LOL That was the only time in my life I got the belt from my Dad and it was the same night that the Wizard of Oz was on. Talk about fright!!!! LOL that's why I am the way I am...LOL LOL LOL ...well Shirley you did say you wanted to know a secret, didn't you. LOL Peace Baby Sister, Peace!
Oh BTW did I mention how much I LOVED this hub and you were soooo adorable in your bib!
Shirley, do you promise not to tell. I ate raw weiners too! Tell your sister she looked so cute in the bib.
I grew up practically in diners. We had one in town, who didn't back then but whenever we went someplace with family no matter which state we were in, my father knew where all the diners were even the one's tucked in the out of the way back corner of its little town. I was in Canada once, I'l have to ask my Dad if I was ever in your diner!
Take care!
Shirley: I figured the truth about living in a diner was something like that.
I didn't like Wings when they first started but I like their music OK now. That reminds me of a mean joke, which I will share and hope that I don't offend anyone. It sould be told out of the blue of course, rather than in this context which gives it away, but, the joke was:
What do you call a dog with wings?
Linda McCartney!
P.S. I ate raw hotdogs too.
Cheerio for now!
Ooh ah ooh -- this hub is becoming a literal walk down Penny Lane! So many great memories of the Beatles. So interesting to read other hubbers' favorites. Yes, I do remember when Abbey Road came out. And all the hype about Paul being dead, etc. More vivid to me is when I first heard Rubber Soul which was so DARK and haunting -- very different from the fun pop of their first stuff. I had an album that is difficult to find called Beatles VI. It had some great songs like "Kansass City" "Mr. Moonlight" (John at his best) and "I do't want to spoil the party so I'll go." And one I love about "Baby's in black and I'm feeling blue" (I think the title is "What Can I Do?" I also love "I Saw her standing there." When my son was growing up that was one of the songs I used to sing to him going to sleep and taught him to sing with me! Later I trained him to listen to a Beatles song and be able to tell which Beatle was singing. It's really clear the different voices and styles of songs -- My hubby loves George Harrison's work. I'm sure he didn't coin this but he says it whenever we listen to one of our many Beatles CDs in the car: Ringo was the Happy Beatle, Paul was the Romantic Beatle, George was the Spiritual Beatle and John was the Angry Beatle. As if I (or anyone else) would have trouble telling them apart:)!
You couldn't have been a teen in the 60's and not have been a Beatles fan! Their music changed our world and affected our lives in a deep way. When I hear a certain Beatle song, it takes me back to a specific moment in time. Not many artists have achieved that, or anything close to it!
Great hub!!
Oh I love the Beatles I do there is no denying that. Actually in my opinion in some ways the Moody Blues are just as good today if not better than when they were younger. Actually all the original members are still in the band, except for Pike Pinder who left because he wanted a life at a normal pace back in the seventies, and Ray Thomas who decided he wanted to retire in 2002. The new flutist Nora Mullen is phenomenal, but not many people realize how phenomenally excellent if not better the Moody Blues are today because they do not follow the band is closely as I do :). I am here to educate everyone about the Moodies, they are still top notch :).
Thank you for the read . I was only 3 years old when the Beatles hit the Ed Sullivan show ,which also was a major part of my early years . I do however own almost every album they ever made .And It never ceases to amaze me how younger generations also know the words to all of their songs . Without a doubt the most significant band of any era !
Oh and by the way REVOLVER Is my favorite TAXMAN Is such a great beginning to that album !
Great Hub lovely memories of your childhood. I have ived with the Beetles forever and "Love me do" and "Please please me" are the quitessential beetle songs ( and sounds) for me. My hair was in that Beetle fringe and I was actually called "Beetle" at work becuse I was so hung up on them. I recall saying in the early 60's that the Beetles would be to modern music, what Beethoven was in his day (before "Rollover Beethoven" was recorded). I was amazed at Lennon when he said " the Beetles are more popular than Jesus" which caused Beetle records to be banned from being played on our National Broadcast station (the SABC).
How could I forget the Beatles? I was named Michelle because when I was born in 71' they were the hit then! LOL Loved hearing your story Shirley. It's easy to imagine you in the diner and house and all... :-)
This was a fun Hub to read! However, my favorite part is your living over the diner.
Oh by the way Shirley that Monkees song you were referring to Is actually called "Daydream Believer " not Sleepy Jean . And the Monkees were part of my TV consumption along with Adam West In Batman and Johnny Quest In the mid to later 60s . It Is really fun to reminisce here ! Oh and Michael Nesmith from the Monkees was actually quite a accomplished guitar player too !
LOL @ u Shirley...Naughty Dottie Angel makes a quick note, no raw weinies for Shirley she likes F-cup cookies, marguaritas and wine, lol!
It's fun singing to myself as I read and remember all the Beatle songs, Mr. Moonlight, I don't want to spoil the party, awwwww and Michelle My Belle!
I loved Daydream Believer mentioned above too, Great song.
I liked the Moody Blues too like SweetiePie. First song comes to mind is Nights in White Satin!...and then Isn't Life Strange...
I've got to go now tend to things, I'll see ya Shirley from the Good Naughty Angel!
BTW the Beatles hubs are always so much fun, I'll have to come back!
Oh and by the way Sweetiepie " Lovely to see you " Is my favorite Moody Blues song . Of course with at least 12 more I love .
The guys name was Race Bannon he was my cartoon hero !
Wow this is definitely a trip down memory lane worth taking. But I'm a little sore because you actually lived the Beatlemania while I have to make do with great stories like this!
Anyway, thanks for this trippy bit of nostalgia! :D
My son did a cover of "here comes the sun" with guitar and vocals over skype last night. as he wants to know if it is "tidy" enough to sing for his new girlfriend as she apparently loves the song, so the new generations still love this music from the fab four.
I see I used the grammatically correct spelling Beetles forgetting that the Beatles had mis-splelled Beetles as Beatles and had stuck to that spelling. I must be getting old or something!
Jumped up, talentless, over rated, bunch of Scousers. I can't believe how many people fell for that rubbish.
Fantastic story, the Beatles are one of my all time favorite bands!
Wow!! Great job! I, too, love the Beatles!! I grew up listening to them, thanks to my mom and step-dad. I thought about doing something on The Beatles when I saw this week's topic, but now I am really glad I didn't. You did an amazing job, and I never could have come close!
Hahaha what a great material for a period movie from the point of view of a little Shirley's eyes revealing the undying effect of the Beatles! You've got yourself the right characters -- the cute innocent shy girl in saddle shoes, the myopic blueyed blond waitress, the typical all american parents and grandparents and of course the beatles. You have tons of actual video and audio materials of that era! Now please write the screenplay and submit to producers immediately! This is not an order. This is a plea.......pleeeeeaaase! LOL. Thumbs up!:)
Calling back the past is fun even if you actually lived it too!
Music of beatles has entertained millions of people. Beatles music is just superb and will go on to be loved till centuries. Great hub.
I hope you are feeling better. You've been work so hard here for everyone else's benefit! So...I have a little surprise for you! You know how up there I said I was going to get you a t-shirt....well....

Now I need to go put on some fast songs so I can lose 5 lbs, too!
Hi Shirley, thank you for those musical links. Will I ever stop getting the goose bumps when I hear the Beatles. I doubt it. I hope not.
I'm passing by to... oh I see you hubbing...I thank you for showing me how to spy on you...you just left a message on this hub "Today we had a visit from Hell...hahaha, I like spying...
Well anyway are you watching the Grammy awards right now. Paul McCartney just finished singing "I saw her standing there". He performed with the Foo Fighters. He may be back on, I'm not sure. I think I heard he is being nominated for a grammy but I don't know what....gotta go check more out! Later! :)
Shirley Regrettably no they never came to South Africa and by they time I started travelling the world they were no longer together. I was in Dallas visiting the Kennedy museum when John Lennon was shot though. Strangely enough, I was also in Dallas when Reagan was shot! But I digress. I did get to see the Stones though (my next choice from that era).
Shirley just as another amazing coincidence, I was in New York staying at The Stouffer hotel in upstate New York. the day after I left for Washington, the Hotel burnt down and the entire executive Of the Arrow Group (potentially the Microsoft of the day) were all burned to death and the company was no more. I played tennis on the indoor court right next to the conference centre and I noticed that the doors opened the wrong way. I believe the New York fire laws on door exits were changed after that incident.
Happy Valentines Day Shirley from Naughty Dottie Angel
on the Beatles Valentines Day! Enjoy :=)
Awwwwww Shirley you've got to have this one too!

Shirley - Being older than dirt, I can remember watching the Fab Four on Ed Sullivan. It is actually amazing the they put in more than 10,000 hours of performance in Liverpool and Hamburg before the reached the USA. They will always be my favorite, and as corny as it is, I love to Early Beatles through the White Album. There are too many favorites to list...so just know that they have a special place in my heart. Danny
Hi Shirley, thank God for compu-smart's birthday hub so we could be reminded that today is George Harrison's birthday.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY GEORGE HARRISON.
Me and Shirley miss you sooooo much. We are celebrating with you in spirit! Thank you for singing 'My Sweet Lord' in the video. You are soo sweet! Here's the link so Shirley can hear you sing too.
Great hub. I remember watching them that February night as if it was yesterday. It changed my life and I believe it strongly influenced my becoming a musician. I have the DVD sets of all their Sullivan appearances. (Great DVD set by the way, all the shows with original commercials as they aired at the time).
